The Des Moines Register reports that a serious multi-car crash in Iowa injured five people. The accident happened on Interstate 80 and involved at least 25 cars.
Local media reports that the crash happened close to the U.S. Highway 65 exit in the mid-afternoon. The crash affected a 1.5-mile section of the road, according to a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.
Five people sustained serious injuries; however, officials on the scene say they are not life threatening. Emergency workers transported the victims to local hospitals for treatment.
The large crash closed the road for several hours as officials rushed to the aid of the injured and cleared the wreckage. All lanes reopened approximately 3 hours after the incident. The accident is still under investigation, but experts say icy temperatures and poor visibility may have contributed as a cold front swept across the state of Iowa.
